what my kids write about my dance teaching

Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones.
Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones.
Dem bones, dem bones, dem dry bones.
Now hear the word of the Lord.
Verses
Toe bone connected to the foot bone
Foot bone connected to the leg bone
Leg bone connected to the knee bone…

Fanchon is the one to show you how your bones are connected to your muscles to your ligaments to your fascia to your nervous system to your cells to your brain and your heart:  After that she teaches you to connect to soul and then to your divine essence and then out of yourself and into the great unknown where words are of no use but movement and awareness are your spaceship to the infinite. If you’ve ever wondered what it all means then keep wondering: if you’re ready to feel and move through multi dimensional space of here there everywhere then go see Fanchon and get on board the Kinesthetic majestic fantastic elastic and magic wave of movement that transports one to the deepest depths of all that is was and will be; yes dancing can take you there. Believe it.

Mammals, we are. We just forgot how to be them. Dogs run to the hills when a tsunami approaches. Cats know when you are scared. Birds flee before the storm arrives. We stand still as humans and wait for the news to warn us. We do not need to anymore.

A class with Fanchon will teach you to feel the vibrations of the world around you. To reconnect with your innate instincts. To sense what is coming and see clearly what is right in front of you. To move through life aware and awake, with your senses heightened and your body ready to respond.

There is a healthier, more energized, self aware version of you waiting to burst out. Fanchon will light that fuse!

This is a note from a former student, her son- to anyone who wants to dance or study with Fanchon.

Dear Perspective Mover in this mad, mad world,

My mom is old, and wise and at this stage of her life I would love her to have good students and collaborators- if this is you I have a few things to say to you-

Before you can begin to study or dance or study with Fanchon, I think it is important to understand a few things.  Most important to understand is how deeply the world we all inhabit these days isn’t interested in moving, that in practice, the world view we live inside is at war with the kind of movement my mother and others have been investigating their whole lives. To ignore this simple truth, I believe, is to skew the process and all your perceptions about the work you will be doing my mother, Fanchon.

To truly move, to be moved, to move with the wind,  is to connect to the primal, to the emergent. The emergent is the natural way of all reality, and all physics and is in movement in all time.  All of reality is emergent,  it is in constant becoming, constant movement, this is how we all are.  But here is the rub,  the world that occupies our minds, the world you and I are stepping out of when we enter the space of Dancing or study with Fanchon, is a world of separation, a world of Answers, and knowing, a world reaching for fundamentalist answers… the pillars of the world most of us have been trained to exist in, trained by our schools, and our work, is a world at war with the emergent, with movement.  This world searches for security in absolutes, like all religions.

Before you can dance or learn from my mother you must be willing to not know, together. Being is awareness without the security of knowing.

The point I am trying to make is that we need to realize, in this time, how far we must go before we are ready to dance together.

I want my mother’s students to be worthy of her work.  I have watched my mother for years, teach baby steps.  I think my mother is too old to take her students and dancers from A to B, I would love to see you leap- and start at B.  If you leap, when you come to dance with her, or study with her you will not waste your effort or time, or hers.

Personally, I do not understand why her classes do not have hundreds of students every class- they should.  She is a great teacher.

“I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.”

John Steinbeck

It is so interesting to me how the world does not value choreography or dance very much, because at one time both were our greatest technology, central to the magic of the world. What does it mean that the world we live in expends tremendous energy fighting and devaluing dance- something that at one time was one of the greatest magics our species possessed? In some way I think dancers are the most persecuted, the most devalued artists in the last 25 years.  Why?  Well, maybe it is the fact that musicians can sell their songs, filmmakers can sell their movies, but dancers can not truly be objectified, monetized, and therefore may be the most dangerous art for this mad mad world.

“It is no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society.”-KRISHNAMURTI

I think you need you understand this when you come to dance with Fanchon.  If you are going to dance with her you need to cast off so much, or at least be willing to cast off so much, to at least be opening to the emergent.  Can you do it?  I’m not sure if you can do it, I’m not sure I can do it, but this is the beginning point I think, if you are going to work with Fanchon.

Let me tell you what I need you need to do, to be, before you step into the room with her,  remember she is an old old woman and she has very little time and I need you to not waste any of her time, or yours.

Before you are ready to begin to dance with her, I think you need to do a few things.  First, you need to breathe like the tides. Second, try to surrender the illusion of your own individuality, for in the emergent world, the world of reality, your own individuality, while real, is also an illusion, a conceit.  Third, feel the tendrils of your energetic being,  the tendrils that stretch out from you, but are not you, that are the energy that is everything.  Do you think you can do this?  I think this would be a great place to be, before you come to dance with Fanchon.

Let’s be good students if we are going to work with this woman.

And if you are going to dance with her, perform with her let me warn you- there will be no riches, there will be no tears of joy, the applause you get will only be half given and half understood because what you do when you dance with Fanchon is reaching for the jugular of the madness of this world.  You will be participating in the artform that the world we live in wants to crush.

I hope I am not depressing you, but I feel that without this understanding you will be dancing in illusion, but with this understanding you can be a little more honest, you are accepting that you are re-making yourself and the world.

As an ex-student, and her son, these are the understandings I think you need, felt deep in your body, before you begin to dance or study with my mother, Fanchon.  She is an old teacher, these are her last teachings- rise to the occasion dancers and students!

Yours,

Michael
